Armed with a collection of many bizarre questions and promise not to withdraw “another movie about penguins,” director Werner Herzog travels to Antarctica, with the intention of making a film about what he finds under the ice. He begins his story on a military plane that will carry him to the station of McMurdo, the U.S. Antarctic research center. The station is located on the south side of Ross Island, on the shore of McMurdo Sound, and can support life and work of approximately 1200 people. Werner Herzog interviews with philosophers, bankers, and even other filmmakers, all of those who ran away from his usual city life to live and work at McMurdo. He also interviews with some scientists and teachers school survival. Even being with all these interesting people living and working at McMurdo, Werner Herzog upset by how this life is so similar to the city (he hates the presence at the station yoga courses and vending machines), and yet he was very disappointed with the good weather… Renowned documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog invites you to open to him cold and picturesque land of the Arctic. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary, 2009.
